# Google goto URL Redirects and AI Rewrites: The Click Layer Is Now Mediated

Google goto URL redirects, AI-rewritten product titles, and AI Mode link carousels now sit between your site and the click. What each one breaks.

Sophisticated, minimal conceptual illustration on a very dark ink background (#111318) with a single restrained warm accent glow. High-end business-publication aesthetic, subtle depth, cinematic soft light. No text, no words, no letters, no logos, no UI labels. Prompt sent to Higgsfield · nano_banana_pro · 3:2

If you instrument your own SEO, three moves in the last month change what your tools can see. Google goto URL redirects now wrap organic result links in a server-side hop, Google Ads has started rewriting product titles with AI, and AI Mode is inserting link carousels between the paragraphs of its answers. The common thread is control. Google is inserting itself into the click layer and, in one case, rewriting the content it serves on your behalf. Here is each change and the engineering consequence.

## Google goto URL redirects wrap the link before you get the click

On August 26, 2026, Google confirmed it is replacing direct destination links in some Search results with a server-side redirect of the form google.com/goto?url=[hashURL]. The destination is no longer readable in the anchor. It is encoded in a hashed parameter, and the browser passes through Google before landing on your page. Testing began in July, and Derek Perkins of Nozzle reports seeing it at nearly 100% rollout across several residential IP providers.

Google’s stated reason is to protect against abuse of its search results, which reads plainly as anti-scraping. The engineering consequence is direct. A rank tracker or scraper can no longer read destination URLs straight from the results HTML. It has to follow every redirect to resolve where each link goes, and a single results page can carry hundreds of them. That is a large jump in requests, latency, and cost per crawl, aimed squarely at the third-party tools and AI engines that read the SERP at scale.

For the searcher, nothing changes. For anyone measuring the SERP, the cheap read just became an expensive one.

## AI-generated product titles: Google now rewrites your copy

The second change moves from mediating the click to rewriting the content. Google Ads has added a Product titles report that shows the title Google’s AI generated for a product next to the title you actually supplied. Google’s AI serves its own version in Shopping ads when it judges that version more relevant, and it keeps yours when it does not.

The report sits in the product performance section of Merchant Center and breaks out impressions, product clicks, CTR, cost, and average CPC for each version. No conversion or revenue column is named, which matters. You can compare click behaviour between the two titles, but the report stops short of telling you which one actually sold. Titles surface here only after enough impressions, and you can steer the AI with text guidelines in campaign settings rather than fixed copy.

Treat it as a measurement surface, not a set-and-forget feature. This is the same instrumentation discipline that applies whenever an upstream metric can silently shift underneath you. When the platform rewrites your title, the title you wrote is no longer the thing being tested.

## AI Mode link carousels move citations into the answer

The third change is about placement. Google has brought developing-topic link carousels to AI Mode, extending a format that already ran in AI Overviews. These are horizontal rows of clickable article cards that appear when a topic is moving quickly, each card showing an image, a headline, the source name, and a publication date. Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, announced the availability on X.

Placement is the point. The small citation links usually sit at the edge of an AI response. These carousels appear between sections of the answer itself, and they surface a user’s Preferred Sources. For fast-moving topics, that turns freshness and source authority into a visible slot inside the response, not a footnote after it. It is another reason ranking and visibility keep diverging: the position that gets seen is now a card inside the answer, not a blue link below it.

## What to do with this

Read all three as one pattern. Google is steering users into AI surfaces while raising the cost of reading those surfaces from outside. Audit your rank tracker’s methodology and ask how it resolves goto redirects and whether its numbers moved when the rollout hit. Log the delta between your supplied product titles and Google’s rewrites as real data. When your click layer is mediated by a party that also rewrites the content, first-party instrumentation stops being a nice-to-have.

If you want a second pair of eyes on how these changes hit your own tracking stack, that is the kind of thing I dig into.
